Why Valentines Day SUCKS!

Eyyyy sexy ladies!

So you've probably guessed by now that this isn't your typical Valentines Day blog post. You won't see any "gift idea's" or "romantic night in/out" here. In fact I'm going to be one of those whiney annoying negative people who suck out all the fun of this holiday. If your into this romantic lovey dovey crap then perhaps you should sneak off now.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not anti love. I've been in a happy relationship for over a year now and I've been in serious relationships before which have lasted years. I just don't agree with this holiday. Ok yeah its nice to be able to buy and receive gifts and go out somewhere fancy but why must we restrict ourselves to doing this once a year?

Personally I would rather put thought into a gift instead of the generic chocolates, flowers & card cliché and I would do it off my own back and in my own time rather than doing it just because I felt like I had to to go a long with the whole charade.

In my opinion doing things for your significant other shouldn't be because its February 14th and its accustomed to. You should do it anyway every now and again to show them how much you love and appreciate them. Valentines day means nothing to me. What means to me is my boyfriend bringing me home the thing I've been talking about for weeks unexpectantly. Or my boyfriend telling me he loves me when we are cuddled up together. That's more real and meaningful than a card plastered with "I love you" on it.

So yeah basically what I'm trying to get at is don't just leave it to Valentines day to do something for your partner. Do it because you want to, not because you feel like you have to. And tell them you love them everyday, even if they already know. Its much more nicer when its genuine and not forced just for the occasion.

Another reason why Valentines Day sucks (sorry)...

The people who are single during this time are made to feel inferior just because they don't have someone. They are made to feel like its wrong to be alone. Some singletons might not care but a lot do. I see comments like "hate being alone for valentines day" or "I wish I had a boyfriend". They even renamed it "Single Awareness Day" or SAD for short. Its frustrating because holidays should be for celebration. Not to make certain people feel lonely and crappy about themselves.

In conclusion to this rant, Valentines day is just a lame way for companies to make a few extra pennies (or dollars, sorry UK here) and fill in the gap between Christmas and Easter. I understand people may totally disagree with this whole post and enjoy taking part in this tradition but for me and Danny we will be doing nothing more than playing some video games and perhaps watch something zombie related on the TV. Soooo romantic!

Happy fricken Valentines day everyone.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed my little rant.
I'll do something more upbeat next time I promiseee!

Don't forget to leave your comments below and tell me what you thought about this post. Do you like Valentines day or do you think its a big pile of steaming poo like me?

  1. Finally a post I can relate to about Valentines Day - i'm happily married and we don't celebrate Valentines, to us it really is just a retail holiday!

  2. This is my first valentines day alone for 5 years now my boyfriends left me :'( buuuutttt...
Despite being single again, I've always loved valentines day. I've never been popular so never got cards until I forced the now ex to buy me one :p. I don't know why I like it, I just do.
When I was single at uni, me and my housemates would go to lock and key parties at our local night club whereas one housemate would shut herself away until all valentines festivities were over.

    1. Screw your ex boyfriend! (not literally but y'know).. there's nothing wrong with being single!

I've disliked Valentines day regardless if I'm with or without someone. I just don't see why a day should make me feel the need to make a certain effort to spend my money.

If I want to spend my money and treat my boyfriend then that should be down to me.

The lock in's sound good though :) I think its good for single friends to take fun in the holiday and just go with it rather than sulking about it.

  6. I actually don't like it either. I don't like anything obligatory. It's more like a holiday for children and teenagers than actual couples. I find it to be comercialized just as Christmas. I hate holidays tbh since I've became an adult xD

  9. It's a commercial thing just like Mother's Day. We just stay in with a takeaway, or one of us cooks and we have wine. Done!

    1. I hate mothers and fathers day! What about daughters day ey!

I have a few friends who don't have a mother or father and I just feel sorry for them during those days when everyone else is rubbing things in. We don't need these holidays to show people what they mean to us. We should just do it anyway!

      Thanks for commenting x

  10. Amazing post, I agree with you so much! I think Valentines Day is stupid, you shouldn't need a day to show that you appreciate the person you love because you should do that anyway. It's just an excuse for retailers to make money xx

  11. Valentine day is good for the offer restaurants do for couples. And going with some friends pretending to be couples is perfectly accetable (and when I did it, I even had a boyfriend...now I go hunting for discounts in fancy restaurants with him).
Other than that, I agree! :D

    1. Oh my gosh! I didn't know restaurants did that. Now I've got to snag someone to go looking for couple discounts with. ;)

    2. The only downfall of it is that every bloody restaurant is full so your waiting a good 30minutes before your even seated which is highly annoying for the people who don't celebrate Valentines day and just want to go out regardless.

Cheap discounted valentines day chocolate though! mmmmm :)

    3. Well, it depends on the restaurant actually! This year for example we went to one that usually does only big groups (ceremonies usually) and only that evening was open for couples. They were fast and everything was damn good!

And riiight, how could I fogert the chocolate cakes for the after-valentine ahahah!

Madeline good luck next year, you'll just have to ignore the shower of hearts everywhere, but eating good for cheap makes up for it :D

  12. Haha! I love this. I almost wrote a blogpost about the dreadful holiday myself, but decided against it. So glad someone decided to. Maybe I'll write it towards the end of the week. :)

    1. Yeaaaah I didn't see anyone else criticise the holiday so thought I'd do something a tad different... even if it is negative as anything!

I was kind of sick of seeing all the generic gift guides and whatnot.

      Thanks for commenting :) x

  13. Well, the way I see it, it's a comercial Day. But the love is needed to work everyday, not only it's Valentine's Day, but it's the rest of the days. You must work everyday living with your partner, having things in commun, sharing your lifestyle, and so on.

  14. me and my hubby had decided not to celebrate valentines day because everything is more expensive and not as hyped up as it should be.
on the plus side, the chocolates are cheaper a day after as well.

    1. Me and Danny just celebrate our anniversary instead as that means more to us. Its on the 10th of Feb which is only 4 days before Valentines day.

Can't go wrong with chocolate although I didn't see much on offer this year :( i'm currently taking advantage of the mini eggs which are on sale now easter is approaching :P

  17. I agree totally. You should celebrate your love every day of the year, not just because Hallmark tells you to celebrate it on this day.
